Book an appointment with your optician for the best optical advice – that’s the message from Derby practice, Richard Petrie Optometrists.
Practice owner and optometrist Davina Dosanjh says: “We are one of the local opticians that has been part of a new initiative that offers better eyecare to the people of Derby. It’s a scheme that brings together the Ophthalmology Department at the Royal Derby Hospital, the Derbyshire Local Optical Committee and local opticians.”
The new service gives optometrists direct advice from ophthalmic consultants at the Eye Clinic at the Royal Derby Hospital via a new email scheme. It’s an extra support service for optometrists and it can save patients the time and worry that can be caused by a trip to the GP or hospital.
Davina explains: “The best way to see what’s going on at the back the eye is with an OCT scan, which aren’t available at GP surgeries. By visiting your local optician, and having an eye exam with an OCT scan, we can check your entire eye health and if we have any concerns, we can send your scans direct to the Ophthalmic clinic to get the best advice.
“Doctors then examine the scans and advise us whether patients need to be referred to the hospital or can receive alternative treatment, without going to the hospital for a consultation.”
Richard Petrie Optometrists were part of the pilot scheme which has proven useful for the practice.
Davina adds: “Everyone wins from this. It is a fantastic initiative that will save patients time and worry, whilst saving the NHS time and money. I hope it will encourage people to visit their optometrist with any eye conditions, instead of their GP.”
